How to choose a primary care doctor

Credentials matter, but so do access, communication style, and whether the practice fits your week.

A primary care physician is the doctor you'll see most over your lifetime. It's worth choosing deliberately rather than taking whoever has the first opening.

Start with the type of doctor

Family medicine physicians see all ages. Internists focus on adults and complex chronic disease. Geriatricians specialize in older adults, and pediatricians in children.

Then look at access

How soon can you get a new-patient visit? Is there same-day care for illness? Can you message your doctor? These practical details shape your experience more than almost anything else.

This guide is for general education and isn't medical advice. Talk with your physician about your own situation.
